Viva la Vida for string orchestra
Will Whitten - Viva la Vida for string orchestra (mockup)
  • Nuages Gris (Gray Clouds) is a piece of solo piano music composed by Franz Liszt in 1881. The piece is known for its melancholic and introspective mood and is often described as one of Liszt's most intimate and personal works. The piece is characterized by its slow and expressive pace, with a focus on delicate touch and expressive phrasing. The music explores the various moods of the pianist, from moments of deep introspection to more energetic, virtuosic passages.

However, when arranging this piece, I sought to impart a unique touch to the original composition. While mostly preserving the melodies, I meticulously adjusted the starting points of each line to evoke a sense of foreboding, similar to the feeling one gets when one first spots a rain cloud in the sky. As the arrangement progresses, the tension builds as the tight harmonies become increasingly dense and inescapable, culminating in an explosive release of energy, mirroring the unstoppable flood of a rain cloud. This serves to capture the essence of the radical atmosphere of a grey sky
