Inferno was composed for three talented students at Flagstaff High School who were looking for music to perform for their solo and ensemble performances. Not finding any of the existing music compelling, I set out to create a piece that would be both fun to play and challenging, highlighting the strengths of the trombone.
The piece opens with a slow, expressive section featuring cup mutes, exploring the rich, muted tones of the instrument's color palette. This is then followed by a bold, energetic second half, designed to capture the true power and bold spirit of the trombone. The rhythmic lines and interplay between the trio bring out the instrument's fiery but agile capabilities.
