FLUGELHORN SONATA - for solo flugelhorn and piano

$50.00

After many months of collaborating and working closely with those at Northern Arizona University, I was asked by Dr. Kevin Tauge if I would be interested in writing a piece for him. I immediately got to work on trying to write a work that can both play to Dr. Tauge's strengths but also showcase his side of music appreciation by creating a feeling and vibe of a jazz trumpeter playing mellow but lively music. Given that this is my first solo piece that I have composed, Dr. Tauge and the fantastic piano collaborator, Dr. Aimee Fincher, truly brought this piece to life with their musicianship.

The flugelhorn has always been a fascinating instrument. Its shape, timbre, and use in ensembles is unique. The flugelhorn is a beautifully complex instrument that is not highlighted enough for its flexibility, color, and beauty. Flugelhorn Sonata was composed with the intent to showcase the flugelhorn through louds, softs, highs, lows, fast and slow melodies, and motifs. With inspiration from Tin Tin Por Tin Tin” by João Gilberto, allowing the flugelhorn to dance, and the album Cello Quartet by composer Roger Kellaway this piece delves into the instrument’s many musical facets while offering both a challenge and a showcase.
